Quitting Cigarettes and Quarantine

Quitting smoking is very easy! ,Isn’t it? A very easy thing to do? which we all have done many times.Jokes apart, we all have been there, done that and we will try doing it again and again. Hopefully, one day we will be successful.

I won’t talk about the disadvantages of smoking. We smokers know it more than the non smokers, don’t we? And while sharing the last cigarette and last peg of the day with our buddies all of us have made a promise to god…” From tomorrow No cigarettes “.

Most of us will call themselves occasional smokers and with the friend that we have, occasions will arrive faster than a good day at work.

Well, even a regular day at work keeps us away from quitting it many times. And if at all it’s a good day, I know in most cases family members make sure that the day won’t have a closure without a drag.

Those five minutes of holding a cigarette are no less than meditation for us.

In meditation, it is suggested that you sit still and observe the breath and while smoking, we do exactly the same ! Isn’t it? And If you are an Indian , you will love to have cup of tea with a drag of smoke.

It also has a problem solving capacity like meditation as most of have found many solutions over a cigarette break!

Although, we all know there is no relation between the two. Meditation and smoking are definitely not same.Smoking, surely has it’s disadvantages in the long term. But, by now I am sure you could relate a little with me like a smoker buddy.

Yes, I am writing about quitting cigarettes today. But It was not before very long that I used to smoke, after many attempts of gradually trying to quit cigarettes.

Although, it is the best way according to many doctors as well to quit smoking gradually.

I think, for many of us that won’t work. Because by now we all know that it’s not really an addiction which we can’t give up. In fact, We can give it up but it’s a habit which is relatively difficult to give up.

So, it won’t be wrong to say that while knowing all the disadvantages and advantages of smoking, we all want to give up this habit one day.

If you also think the same way, I think we have the perfect opportunity during lockdown time. We all have already seen, how nature across the world is reviving itself, while we are not toxicating it. Air quality has improved in cities, birds are flying back and even in a city like Mumbai, we have heard of dolphins visiting the shores!

What more, River banks of Ganga are also recovering from the damage without allocating large amount of money on cleaning projects!

Most importantly, Quarantine is proving to be most effective in the process of being environmently friendly.

An Healthy environment will only confirm the good health of our families ~ Fact.

We are also part of nature and our bodies also deserve a chance to revive and breathe properly. Why not? if it can really save us money on doctor’s bills in the future?

I still remember as a kid, I always thought of man with a cigarette in hand as “macho” (Thanks to our movies) and somewhere, I wanted to smoke like him one day.

But today I realise, By continuing to be smokers, somewhere we will also inspire our future generations to be like us. Probably, we need them to see us as “healthy” than “macho”. And there is no burden, If you want no one can stop you from smoking again after the lockdown but what’s the harm in trying?

After all, no one has ever died from quitting smoking!

It also has good monetary benefits as you really need to save money during this quarantine. Trust me, We haven’t seen tomorrow yet and that’s the only truth, everything else is just an assumption.

By now, you must have understood that I am suggesting, you do not to stock up on cigarettes during this time but give your self an opportunity to come out as a healthier you. Nicotine is removed from our bodies in just in 3 to 7 days after your last cigarette and other day wise benifits of quitting cigarettes are all over the internet and I am sure, you all have read them many times. Let me not repeat that but I will give you some useful tips for stopping the urge to smoke.

Of course, useful only if you decide to come out as a healthy you. I have decided and the following suggestions are from my own experience. Today, I am confident to write this blog while I have no craving for cigarettes in any situation.

1. Wake up Before the Sun and drink warm water:

As per Ayurveda and many old cultures, waking up before the sun is considered as a very healthy habit. As they say to change a bad habit, one should replace it with a good habit.

Let’s start with this one. Are you wondering if this habit has any connection with smoking? Yes, a very important connection. Most of us will immediately face constipation if we stop smoking and this will bring a much better alternative to that morning kick we all need to clear the stomach with a drag of cigarette.

After waking up about 45 mins to 1 hour before the sunrise and before brushing your teeth. Please drink 2 -3 glasses of warm water.

Drink it very slowly just the way you drink hot tea.This will help you clear your bowels very fast and you will start noticing other benefits too very soon. You can google benefits of drinking water in the morning. There is enough data available hence we will not get into details. Don’t forget to keep 45mins gap after and before meals and drinking water. Also avoid drinking water during meals.If you are wondering, how can you drink water before brushing your teeth. Don’t forget you never waited to brush before smoking for that morning kick and water is definitely a better option.

This will also give you digestive benifits as you will drink your saliva with the water and it has medicinal benefits which are available to read across the web.

Drinking warm water is also good to keep corona virus away.

2. Practice deep breathing :

While deep breathing is known for many benefits, it will help us to clean our lungs faster and improve stamina. Dont forget, with affected lungs we also have increased risk of getting infected with Corona virus. So while, Deep breathing will keep you away from the urge of smoking and clean your lungs, it will also try to keep you away from Corona virus.

3. Meditation:

Although, Meditation will be your best friend to live a balanced life. I know, many of us try to run away from it. Some don’t believe if this simple practice can really have benefits and some can’t sit for long to achieve real benefits of meditation. Hence, I won’t make it a forceful suggestion but highly recommend meditation for your everyday .life. I will write about an easier way to achieve meditation in another blog till then will give you a simple process to follow if you are willing to take my 3rd suggestion as well.

Meditation is a simple process, it is a state of mind and body. Most of us generally try to focus only on the mind which results into difficulty.

Where as your body is equally important in helping you retain the state of mind achieved during meditation.

Japanese people describe meditation as an art of doing nothing and that is exactly what we need to do.

Start with a smaller time frame, as small as 5 mins and increase gradually.

Sit in a comfortable postures of your choice.

Make sure none of your body part is in stress at the start. After that, sit in this position for a selected timeframe without moving. Don’t worry, that itchy feeling over your nose will not kill you, I know its difficult but be strong and be unmoved even if a insect is trying to distract you. It won’t kill you so just be unmoved. By having control over your body which is relatively easier than mind you will achieve your first step towards meditation.

Keep your mouth closed and breath with your nose. Be watchful of your breath that will reduce your thoughts and if a thought comes don’t try to fight it. Try to watch your thoughts as an act of a play performed in front of you. Which might make you a little emotional but deep inside you know it’s just a drama. Watch your problems as a 3rd person, do you remember how easily you found solutions to your friend’s problems when you looked at them as a third person. Slowly, your thoughts will be reduced. Also, Since you have already gained control over your body. Your brain will start generating lesser thoughts as it will realize the entire body has stopped its movement.

Most importantly, Dont try to concentrate or achieve meditation to hard. Pure practice with intention will eventually make you experience the sweetness of being meditative.A Balanced mind will fight corona strongly than a mind which never experienced meditation.

4. Reduce your meal by 20% :

While reducing the amount of food will also help you reduce unwanted. It will also help you stop craving for a cigarette, which we definitely feel after a heavy meal. Your body will also get time to start focusing on revival of your organs by reducing focus from digestion of food. Its advisable to consult a professional dietitian

.5. Exercise and Sleep:

I Know, not all of us are fans of exercises but even a bit of effort will take you to on the path to fitness.

After the session of meditation just do a small set of exercises for as short as 10 mins. I assure you, it will be a smart move in this journey to becoming healtier. I recommend basic stretching for 3 mins , squats for 3 mins and Indian push ups for 4 mins without any break depending on your current fitness levels.

After following all the above suggestions, Which I am also practicing myself, You will definitely get a great night’s sleep. But, I still recommend you get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep for your body to perform it’s part in the process of being healthy. I hope, the above suggestions and my experience will help you quitting smoking this quarantine.End of the day, it’s our choice on how we want to go back to life after quarantine.
